Life in the park 2017!!

My, how things are changing in the park as 2017 winds to an end. We are now half way through the landscape restoration works and the building of the new café starts soon, so read on to hear about what has been achieved so far and the exciting year ahead.

Building package of works awarded

In December 2017 the Council awarded the contract for the buildings package of works to Clark Contracts. This work includes building the new café, the restoration of the Stables Block, new toilets and the Bothy for our merry band of volunteers. Work on all of this begins in the New Year.

Landscape works on target for completion july 2018

Our landscape contractors, P1 solutions have made fantastic progress in the park since August. Some of the things they have done so far;

· Installed the ground source heating pipes.

· Laid the new paths which are all ready for their final top coat of tarmacadam in the New Year.

· Completed the new west car park.

· Started work on the east car park.

· Laid the new services through the park.

· Installed the new steps in the Italian Garden.

· Built the pergolas in the rose garden and replanted 1000’s of roses.

· Created the beautiful new Water of Leith viewpoint near the weir.

Some of the very exciting things to look out for in the New Year are the return of the Bandstand to the park and the renovation of the Winter Garden.

The friends of saughton park

The Friends of Saughton Park ended 2017 on a real high and despite having no ‘home’ they managed put on their annual Christmas event at Balgreen Bowling Centre and lots of folks came along to make their own Christmas wreath, eat cake, make origami tree decorations, buy plants and generally get into the Christmas spirit.

To round off the year as only the Friends can, they donated an amazingly generous £1275.00 to the park which will pay for some lovely stone carving at the new Water of Leith viewpoint near the weir.

Thank you FoSP!

The Friends meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00pm. Come along and join them!

Next meeting is Thursday 1 February 2018!
